Traditional community development work focuses on the built environment. At Nexus, we believe people are what make a community special.
We work with community-based organizations in low-wealth communities to support them in creating communities that reflect the vision and creativity of the people who live and work there. We call this approach community building: strengthening the social, cultural and human capital of residents to engage more fully in their neighborhoods and to take advantage of all of its economic potential.
It’s a simple equation:
- We strengthen the capacity of organizations to implement effective community engagement and asset and wealth building strategies.
- We expand the collective impact of organizations working in low-income communities by convening and coordinating strategic networks that work across sector, geography, culture or issue.
- We build the field of community engagement by expanding and influencing the local and national dialogues about community building.
When we add up all of these collaborative efforts, we have created healthier, more vibrant communities in the Twin Cities region.
