Since its inception in 2008, New American Academy has been advocating improving the lives of East African communities, particularly Somali immigrants who are low-income and disenfranchised. The goal of their current grant program is to engage traditionally marginalized and underrepresented communities (low income, communities of color, immigrant communities and persons with disabilities) in decision-making, planning implementation, and leadership roles along and around Corridors of Opportunity transit-way development. The funding for these grants comes from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Sustainable Communities Regional Planning Grant Initiative.
