We Are a Harvest of Survivors

Jan. 12, 2026

Nexus has never been an org that simply serves the community—we ARE our communities. Our staff are a mosaic of Black folks, Brown folks, and queer folks. Last week, faced with yet more horror, some of us stepped away from the office to process, grieve, protest, and rest. Some walked down their block to attend Renee Macklin Good’s vigil. Some held space for their children—comforting them while grappling with worry for immigrant loved ones and the sadness of being cut off from people they care about during school closures.

Ongoing attacks on our immigrant neighbors, on Black, Brown, queer, and trans people, once again have the public blessing of those in power. We see their efforts to shut out already oppressed communities growing more overt and aggressive. We know these strategies are calculated, coordinated, and designed to keep us from claiming our power. The weight of it all is meant to keep us from fighting back, from dreaming beyond survival, from believing change is possible.

For centuries, our peoples have counted on one another to care for our loved ones, make ends meet, and create a better future. Nexus remains committed to building for our long-term resilience, cultivating community wealth and resourcing leaders with the skills and funding they need to make transformation possible. Nothing will stop the work that we and countless others have been doing for generations, and will continue to do for generations to come.

Octavia Butler wrote, “We are a harvest of survivors. But then, that is what we’ve always been.” Time and again, our staff draw wisdom from Harvest of Survival: An Affirmation Deck Inspired by Octavia Butler. This week, we take a breath and offer the cards below as we get grounded and keep carrying the work forward.

The affirmation deck and cards below were created by Homegirl HQ.
